Arguably, there are few beverages that can boast about such a long and venerable history as tea. With its medicinal, social, and all-around pleasurable qualities, it only makes sense that tea is the second most beloved drink in the world.

One of the most appealing myths surrounding the origins of tea tells how the Emperor Shen Nung fell asleep under a tea bush while he was boiling some water (the first drink of choice around the world) when a leaf from the bush dropped into his pot. On waking, the Emperor found the new drink deliciously earthy, restorative, and curiously stimulating.

Today, tea is seeing a resurgence. One company that is poised to bring the leaf back to the forefront is Naja Tea based in Long Beach, CA The company imports quality organic loose leaf teas from the major tea growing regions around the world to create sensual tea blends. It’s founder, Naja Hayward, talks to Constant Chatter about the difference between loose leaf tea and bagged tea:

Does it make a difference where you buy your tea?

The old saying, “To end up with a good tasting dish, you have to start with quality ingredients.” applies to tea as well. Tea is a food product with considerable variation in quality, taste, and shelf life. There are several online tea stores that have a reputation for quality offerings. Tea rooms are popping up across the country and selling their menu selections retail, giving you an opportunity to taste before you buy. Many offer classes and formal tea tastings to educate people about tea.

What’s the difference between buying bagged tea and loose tea?

Generally, loose leaf tea has a higher quality than tea bags because you’re getting the whole leaf as opposed to the fannings or dust of the leaves. Not to mention, the experience of preparing a cup or a pot of loose leaf tea and watching the leaves dance in front of your eyes as they unfurl in your cup is truly delightful! It makes afternoon tea much more enjoyable!

Do you steep bagged and loose tea differently?

These days there are many unique ways to steep a good cup of loose leaf tea with little effort. There are disposable tea bags that give you more room for the leaves to unfurl or teapots with built in steeping chambers, and single serving tea mugs with removable infusers. It all becomes a part of creating an exceptional experience around tea time.

What is the best way to store tea?

Tea should be enclosed in an airtight bag or canister with no light to enter and placed in a dry area with no moisture. When stored correctly, your tea can easily maintain its quality for 4-6 months or longer.
